Magaluf Takeover Interview
Tell us about Magaluf takeover and how it all got started?
Last year we set up Awaken Ibiza which was incredible! (Awaken Ibiza 2012 will be
launching soon and you’ll be able to buy tickets on clubbingabroad.co.uk). As soon
as we were back, we knew that we had an amazing formula
which we wanted to extend to other destinations. Our holidays are more like
festivals and they absolutely destroy packages offered by high street holiday
companies.
As a result of our winning formula and our holiday experiences growing up we knew
Magaluf would be the perfect place to launch our second trip. Our holidays are all
about partying and Magaluf has transformed itself to become the largest party
destination in Europe which attracts some of the top bands and DJ’s from across the
world. All the foundations were there to create an unbelievable holiday that blows
our competitors out the water without destroying your wallet and as a result Magaluf
Takeover was born.
How many years have you been running it for?
This will be the first year Magaluf Takeover has taken place and we are pushing out
all the stops to ensure that everyone on the trip has an amazing experience to
remember. Those who came out with us to experience the first Awaken Ibiza last year
can testify how special it is to be part of something from the beginning.
What can people expect if they book Magaluf take over?
Magaluf Takeover is all about taking the best elements of the island and putting
them into a mind blowing 7 days of non-stop partying and entertainment. Our guests
can expect the craziest week of their lives partying alongside hundreds of
like-minded people creating memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.
People often see our trips and think they must be too good to be true for the price-
they aren’t! You’re gonna have the time of your life.
Give us a run down of what will happen during the week?

rest you can get as that night we are heading to Europe’s largest superclub – BCM.
Home to some of the most famous DJ’s from Deadmau5 to Calvin Harris expect a massive
night and with the free bar one you won’t remember,
6th July

join us. That evening will be up to you to decide where you want to go and our reps

the biggest acts LIVE in the world- think Chase & Status, Tinie Tempah, Dizzie

What travel documents do you need?
Quite possibly the most important part of preparing for a clubbing holiday (or any holiday for that matter) is making sure your documents are all in order. Read this guide to make sure your good to go when the date of travel comes.
Passport
The most important document, it makes sense to check the expiry date of your passport well before you go. This allows you to sort out a replacement if needed. Also keep in mind that some countries require your have a certain amount of months left in your passport after you arrive or depart their country.
If you have left it all to the last minute remember that it is possible to get a passport in one day, you have to go to a passport center and you will pay more than the normal rate. This service is available by appointment only.
EHIC
It is important to remember that the EHIC is not a replacement for full travel insurance. The EHIC card allows you to have medical treatment in a EU country that your are visiting. The website for the card says that not all UK residents are covered in Denmark, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland so please do your research before you go.
Travel Insurance
Unfortunately most countries do not have a system like the NHS. In a lot of countries if you have to go to the hospital you will end up with a huge bill for the cost of your medicine / treatment. This is where travel insurance comes in, your policy should should cover the cost of your insurance as well as any costs you incur getting back to your home country.
Travel insurance also covers items you take with you including clothes and electronics (mp3 players, cameras etc)
Visas
As a EU citizen you can travel to other EU member countries without the need for a visa. However if you plan to travel somewhere else such as America you will need a visa or a visa waiver. Make sure you check if you need a visa and apply for it well before the date of travel.
Albufeira Review
In early-mid july 2011 I went to Albufeira, which is situated in the Algarve, south of Portugal. Our group consisted of 11 lads and 7 girls. We stayed for 7 nights.
I’m not British, but come from the Flemish region of Belgium so excuse me if my written English is questionable quality.
Albufeira has two town centers.
-The old town centre where we went only once, was very cosy with lots of narrow streets and beautiful restaurants. This is a typical family destination for people of all ages. There is a big and beautiful beach, a lot of souvenir shops, little marketplaces,…
Around the main square there are some bars with quite a lot of young people of many different nationalities, but it ain’t wild nightlife.
-The new town centre which is called ‘Praia de Oura’. This is where we were staying. There is a ‘strip’ with quite some bars, restaurants and lots of neon lights everywhere. There is also a beautiful sandy beach, one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen. The beach is actually situated between cliffs.
Nightlife – The nightlife is situated around the ‘Montechoro’-strip. There are some bars filled with young people like Matt’s bar, Reno’s, LaBamba, The Garage, Mambo, Patcha, Celebration, Wild&co…
In the mid-week times: Monday to wednesday, it ain’t too busy over all, but some bars like Matt’s or LaBamba will be filled up after midnight, or 1 am. All the bars at the strip have to stop at 4am, except some strip clubs, they go on until 6 or 7 (I think there are two strip clubs close to the strip).
From Thursday to Sunday the strip is packed. A lot of bachelor parties (stag&hens) are there up for a long weekend of sun&partying; saw a lot of silly dressed up people. It even reminded me of Malia sometimes, although the strip at Albufeira is a lot smaller and most of the time less busy.
There’s also one real nightclub with a capacity of about 1500, which is Kiss. Kiss is situated a few hundred meters from the Strip and is busy every night from around 3 am to 6-7am. Most days of the week there are British deejays playing, one or two days a week there are some ‘famous’ Dutch house-deejays spinning.
Prices – I would say the prices in Albufeira are good. Our accommodation was rather expensive but the restaurant-prices were very reasonable. For about 10-12€ you can have a tasty main dish and something to drink. There are a lot of restaurants who try to get you in so if you’re in a (large) group you can negotiate to get some free stuff. Things we got for free when we went out to eat: 4 bottles of wine, garlic bread, bread with tuna, olives,… Particularly if you’ve got some girls in your group you can achieve a lot! If you go off the strip you can find even better deals. One time we found an Italian place where you could get a 3-course meal for just 15€.
I also recommend the old town to go for a supper and a wandering around the cosy streets before heading back to the new town. Taxi’s are widely available and cost about 4 to 5€ for the 3,5km ride. I won’t go by foot, because it is really hilly.
The prices at the bars on the strip were good as well. All bars were free to get in and in most of them you got a pint of beer for only 3€ and a spirit&mixer for 3,5€. Cocktails were shaken right before your eyes for 7€ and they were big, they were served in pint-glasses and weren’t watered down. I haven’t seen any drink offers like 2for1 or anything like that, but it’s possible that some places did this.
The prices at the Kiss nightclub were a lot higher. Without flyers are entry-card you had to pay 15€ just to get in. A beer served in a long-drink glass cost 4€ and a Corona was 5. Cocktails 8 are more.
Nationalities – Speaking only on the Albufeira new town: It’s mainly British (or Irish, I do not hear the difference), I’d say about 70% of all people, maybe slightly more in the weekends. Aside from British there are quite a lot of Dutch youngsters, I’d say up to 15%. The rest is Portuguese or maybe some Spanish. These nationalities were kinda divided over the bars:
Matt’s bar – Rnb/hiphop/dnb/dubstep – mainly British, some Dutch.
LaBamba – Top40 charts – Mainly Portuguese and Dutch, less British
Reno’s – Top40 &dance – Mainly British
The Garage & Patcha bar – Garage/rnb/dance – Mainly British
Wild&co – Mostly live music – a good mix of nationalities
Celebration – Dutch party music/dance – 90% Dutch, British could be refused entry.
Kiss Club – Depending on the theme – a good mix of nationalities; most of the days slightly more British.
à Of course, there are more bars, but these are the most popular ones.
Male/female ratio – Depending on the day. Some days there are a lot of birds, some days guys outnumbered the girls completely. I’d say most of the time it’s like 60/40 boys to girls, which I thought was fine.
Overall – Albufeira is no where near a mental resort as Malia or Lloret the mar. But we were with a large, mixed group of youngsters aging 19 to 23 and had a lot of fun. There was enough going on, and I could have been there having a good time for some more nights before I would have got bored of it.
It’s only a 2.40h flight (from Brussels) and there is no time difference (between Portugal and the UK). I wouldn’t go there for a whole week anymore, but I do recommend it for a long weekend. It’s fairly cheap to go out, the weather is great (although the sea-water was quite cold), and it’s a relatively short flight. Transfer from the airport to the resort is about 45minutes.
Tinie Tempah And His Rise To Stardom
Tinie Tempah or Patrick Okogwu as his mum knows him has risen through the ranks of London Mc’s to become arguably the biggest rap star to come out of the UK, we are going to look at just how he managed to do this.
Early Career
Fans of the Grime scene would of heard of Tinie Tempah a long time before he became the household name that he is today. He had a few underground hits with the songs Tears and also had songs that featured on the soundtrack for for the PSP game Wipeout Pure.
The song that most people really remember Tinie Tempah for was his track Wifey Riddim that received a lot of airplay on the underground music channels and stations and really helped to get his name out there.
Breakthrough
After going on Tour with Dizzee Rascal, performing shows over the UK, setting up his own label Disturbing London and writing new music Tinie’s big break came at the wireless festival when a scout spotted him performing and informed record label Parlophone records. They came to visit Tinie Tempah in his studio and were so impressed with Tinie’s ability that buy October 2009 he was signed to their label.
Mainstream
Tinie Tempah really got mainstream recognition when he released he massive debut single Pass Out from his album Disc-Overy. The single went straight to number 1 where it remained for two consecutive weeks and is still a very popular song on dance floors worldwide.
Tinie Tempah followed up this success by performing at Glastonbury that year and then releasing his second single Frisky which also was another hit. Frisky entered the charts at number 2 and again still remains popular in clubs around the world.
Following his chart success with both his singles and his album Tinie Tempah went on tour with Rhianna, performed at a lot of universities and summer festivals including V Festival and Wireless Festival.
In between all of this Tinie Tempah teamed up with DJ Whoo Kid to release the free mixtape Foreign Object., which you can listen to or download below.
On top of this Tinie has sold out an Arena Tour, sold out shows all over the world and has become one of the most in demand artists around.
He is currently working on his eagerly anticipated second album, it really is only just getting started for Tinie Tempah.

Malia Review
Here’s a Malia review by one of our forum members Midland.
Booked with 18-30s and stayed at the Malia resort hotel. Got into Malia around 2am and got to the hotel for around 3am. Upon arrival was greeted by 18-30 reps and had free shots and had a few drinks. Thing that hit my straight away was the drink prices in the hotel. When i last came it was 5 for 5 euro it is now 5 euro for a standard mixer and 3-4 euros depending on what beer/cider you have.
Due to the time we got there decided against going out so went skinny dipping instead as its a tradition on the first night! Saw a lad passed out in his own vomit the first night and he was still there when we got back from the beach…..bless
Not going to try and run through each day as we played ring of fire every night before we went out and i always pulled the last king out and had to neck the pint of shit drink so to be honest the first 3 days were a complete blur will just cover the knitty gritty.
Nightlife- I loved it, lots of bars to go to only one moan is there are only a small number of bigger clubs to go to which could get repetitive if you went for longer than a week. We always started off in the karaoke bar across the road from our hotel most nights and got good deals. I know some bars do 2 for 1 if you get out early enough but i noticed most girls were not going out until 12/1 because of the drink prices.
Drink prices- Expensive!!! Only word i can use because i am comparing it to last time! I know if you ask in some bars you will get free shots but don’t expect to get any good deals on your mixer’s! We were lucky as the reps told us they had only just started doing 2 for 1′s and free fish bowls and shots around the time we arrived. I reckon next year or the year after it will go back to normal as it clearly affected the amount of people who went this year and the bars were quiet until around midnight. Like i said standard price is 5 euros for a mixer or 7 in some clubs. If you compare that to the UK it is practically the same price if not a little more expensive. I drink vodka lemonade and that costs around £4 max £5 in clubs so i am not getting any benefits in Malia! My tip is to go to a supermarket next to the Malia resort hotel (near reflex) and for 27 euros between four of you, you get 3 bottles of spirit (usually 2 vodkas and a peach snaps) and one mixer and a fish bowl and some straws. We had this most nights. Still managed to nail 50-70 euros some nights tho ![]()
Girl to boy ratio- not to bad actually always was a good amount of girls apart from the flight change over nights. It is funny seeing some lads with there tops off thinking are the bees knees. Beware of the stuck up girls who think they are some kind of model tho my advice go up to them and tell them they are ugly as fuck!
Seen alot of very very very drunk girls. Had to carry one home one night and she wasn’t the exactly light! Nearly pulled my back out i tell you. Last time i offer to be a gentleman i tell thee!
Excursions- we did the booze cruise, pool party, beach party and water park. They were all pretty good. The booze cruise took a while to get going but after i got stitched up by a mate and had to have a dark side i was well and truly on my way! The water park is nowhere near as good as the one in Magaluf but still a laugh either way! The sex on the beach free bar at the pool party was nowhere near as strong as the beach party and booze cruise.
Malia resort hotel- Some very good and bad points. Good points- Pool is one of the biggest in Malia so i am told. The music is very good in the day good party atmosphere. The hotel is bang in the centre of the action.
Bad points- watch out for the maids!! My mate and his pal in other room didn’t get a safe and had there iPhone stolen. Thing is the bloke we does the night shift watch is married to one of the maids and there is a camera overlooking our corridor and one overlooking his room but funnily enough when we asked him to look at the camera he said its hard to make out who it is! Even the local who works in the nearest shop said be aware of the maids. It happened to a few people! The bloke we does nights is a pain if you want to bring a chick back (30-50euros) so better off shagging down the beach or pulling a bird from your hotel as that’s practically prostitution!!!
Don’t eat the Breakfast there it was minging! Don’t let the maids put you off tho just get a safe and don’t leave anything out i would stay in this hotel again due to its location and atmosphere!
Overall- i have done Malia twice now and i am not getting any younger (27 next year) but i did think it was a blast both times even tho i nailed nearly 800 euro in a week but i did pay nearly 200 euro for excursions. I would recommend it to anyone just if you stay there drink before you go out or you will spend a bomb! Also be careful as i know one bird got mugged so try and have a bit of wits about you! I saw far 2 many passed out birds and lads! No need to get that drunk surely! Think because i am 27 next summer i think its time for me to do Napa as i have done Ibiza and although I didn’t feel old i reckon that was due to me going the end of Aug. I think it would be full of 18-21 yr olds at the start of peak season.
Micky Slim Interview
This week we have an interview with Judgement Sunday resident DJ Micky Slim!
Hi Micky tell us a bit about yourself?
I am one sandwich short of a picnic..
Describe your mixing style for us?
I am very animated when I Dj, i love what i do and that comes out in my sets. I have always played a little bit of everything genre wise, it seems to be the way that the scene has moved in more recent times. Raver’s like a bit of everything where as 10 years ago it was lot more genre specific you either liked house or trance etc…
Tell us how you went from unknown to a star, and what advise do you have for the youngsters out there?
I had a few breaks that helped me to become known worldwide but by far the biggest thing was a bootleg i done of the House of Pain’s Jump Around track, it was supported by nearly all the “BIG “ dj’s and helped step my career up a level. Fatboyslim played it in nearly every set for years, i met him when we were touring Australia with the Good Vibrations festival and he told me he loved what i was doing with my music, was one of the highlight’s of my career. The track even got an official release through Warner Music. My advice to youngsters getting into music is to learn how to produce, it will be invaluable to you in your career, anyone can dj thanks to programs like ableton, you need to stand out form the crowd and your own music is the way forward.
Do you feel that DJ’s should also learn to produce these days?
I feel you have to produce now, only a few can make it without production behind them. When i first got into Dj’ing it was about having a hook up at the record shop and if you were lucky you would have a vinyl that only 10 people in your area would have been lucky enough to get, your record box set you apart from other Dj’s. Now thanks to the digital revolution everyone can access all the same music so the best way to stand out from the masses is to have your own tracks or special edits that you have made.
Who are your favourite DJ’s to listen to?
I love hearing all different Dj’s but firm favorites are Chris Lake, Nic Fanciulli, Funkagenda, Judge Jules, Dj Wire, Howard Donald, Krafty Kuts, Rusko, Nero, Chase & Status, Zinc, Redlight, Toddla T, i could go on forever.
What are your 3 favourite tracks?
That’s too hard a question, to narrow down all the music i have loved over the years would be impossible as different tracks mean things to you at different points in your life but i will give it a go. Right now i guess it is..
1. Lets Groove – Earth Wind & Fire
2. Dooms Night – Azzido Da Bass – Timo Mass Mix
3. Me & Mandy – Example
You are known for playing in Ibiza, how has it changed over the years?
I have been going to Ibiza since the late nineties, Ibiza is continually evolving but one thing for me stays the same, there is something special about Ibiza, a spirit of the island almost that for me will always be there. It will forever be a great place to go clubbing but i do feel in the past few years people feel there is a checklist of places they should be seen at, it never used to be the case, you knew what you liked and you went for it, i feel there are way more sheep than shepherds nowadays which is sad.
Are you playing any other clubbing holiday resorts this summer?
I am playing at BCM with Judge Jules over the summer which i love, we do back to back sets which is an honor for me, i started my clubbing days listening to Jules so to Dj with him still feels a bit crazy even though we are good friends now. I also have gig’s lined up in Crete, Tenerife and a tour of Australia in September.
If you could play anywhere in the world, where would it be?
America, i have never been as i can’t get a work visa at the moment, EDM is so big out there now and i have been offered gigs for the majority of my career but have not been able to take them. It is incredibly frustrating.
If DJ’ing did not work out, what would you be doing now?
I am a qualified hairdresser so i guess i would be doing that but who know’s, right now Dj’ing is working and i can’t see me ever stopping producing music so i think my future is definitely in music.
Anything you would like to add?
Id like to say a special thanks to Jules and all of the Judgement Sundays team who have supported me over the years, i have had some of the best times of my life with them and i look forward to many more fantastic memories in years to come.
